Understanding the exam
WSET Level 1 is a closed-book multiple-choice exam with 30 questions in 45 minutes. You need 70% (21 correct) to pass. The questions are straightforward and test your understanding of wine basics.
Level 1 has a very high pass rate. If you attend the course, review the materials, and do some practice questions, you should pass comfortably.
Study timeline (1-2 weeks)
Read the course materials
Work through the WSET Level 1 textbook. It is short and covers all exam topics. Highlight key facts about wine styles and grape varieties.
Practice questions
Take chapter quizzes on GrapeQuiz. Focus on any topics that feel unfamiliar. Review wrong answers and understand why.
Feedback exams & review
Take 1-2 feedback exams. Review any remaining weak areas. Focus on wine storage temperatures and food pairing basics — common question topics.
Key topics to know
Wine types
Know the differences between still, sparkling, and fortified wines, and how each is made.
Grape varieties
Recognise the major white varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling) and red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir).
Serving temperatures
Know correct temperatures for white (chilled), red (room temp), and sparkling (well chilled) wines.
Food & wine pairing
Basic principles: match intensity, consider sweetness and acidity, and how food affects the taste of wine.
Wine storage
Ideal storage conditions: cool, dark, consistent temperature, bottles on their side.
